What Internet Browsers are supported for playing courses? Answer:
Note: Depending on any previously installed software's configuration or if you are using any Netscape version from 3.x to 4.05, you may be prompted to update additional SkillSoft Course Manager (SCM) components after returning to a fresh browser. It is strongly recommended that you follow these prompts before downloading any content to your local hard-disk. I click on Play this course and it hangs on Loading please wait. Answer: This is caused by Java not capable of launching the self-executing applet that brings down the player and runs the course. Java is being blocked or filtered from playing through the browser.
Please
note:
The resolution for this
issue could involve altering your system files
or downloading from the Internet. Please check
with your IS department before beginning any
system changes. Here's how you do it:
If you are using Netscape, check the settings as follows:
Click on the word 'Advanced' on the left side. Check to make sure sure that the Java check boxes on the right hand side are 'checked'. |

If the
Java boxes are checked then the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is probably corrupt.
The resolution to reinstall the Java Virtual Machine in Netscape is to
uninstall and reinstall Netscape. There is no way to reinstall just the JVM in
Netscape.
One other possibility is to check the speed of the network connection. If it comes back as 1,0, -1 then it could be that it is not a trusted site by the browser. Netscape explains this as follows:
To manually make these settings on the users machine: With this preference enabled, if the lookup fails, then textual name equivalence is used to determine if the class can make a connection. This option causes the "name of the home" to be relied upon rather than the stricter DNS/IP address.

Type in the Named box the letters 'prefs.js' and make sure the search encompasses all hard drives
When it finds the prefs.js file, highlight the one with your name (or choose default if there isn't one with your name) in the find Window by clicking on it once with your mouse button. Then hold down the shift key and simultaneously right click on the Highlighted selection. |

If you are using Internet Explorer, check the settings as follows: Download a new Java Virtual Machine (JVM) in Internet Explorer by connecting to the following URL: On the next page you will scroll down to the bottom and select the uppermost of the 3 choices (Microsoft VM build #### for Windows 95/98, Windows Me and Windows NT 4.0) and choose to run it from its current location. Click OK or YES to any of the questions you will be prompted with. Begin download of the JVM that is applicable to your browser.

I am getting a box that pops up and is asking me for a 'User Name' and 'Password'. Answer: |
Have
your Network Administrator change the settings
on the Firewall or Proxy. |

I am getting Script errors in Internet Explorer when I go through the pages. Answer: This is usually due to damaged HTTP files in Internet Explorer. The best thing to do in this case is upgrade or reinstall Internet Explorer. When
I try to play the course I am getting a Program.exe
error. |
Answer: If you receive this message when you try to play a course, then there are parts of the downloaded Course Manager that reside on the Hard Drive. |

Here's how you you remove the offending files - SkillSoftloaded.class 1) Check the c:\winnt\java\classes folder for a SkillSoftloaded.class file and if there is one delete it. 2) Check the C:\winnt\java\trustlib folder for a - Skillsoftloaded.class file and if there is, delete it. 3) Reinstall the course manager (preferably to the same location as the first time). 4) Close all open programs 5) Click on Start--- click Programs --- click on SkillSoft and select Uninstall 6) This will uninstall the course manager and all of its components. You may get an error box that reads cannot remove SkillSoft folder Ignore this message and click OK 7) Reboot the machine.
You should now be able to play a course. |
I
am getting a message Only one instance of the course manager can
be running Answer: This is caused by the fact that when a user has downloaded the course manager they open it on their desktop and go to the site while they have it open. When a user logs onto the site we automatically check for an installed SkillSoft Course Manager and launch it automatically so that it can synchronize with the server. If it is already open on the desktop the LMS tries to open a second Course Manager. Here's how you do it: Close all instances of the course manager, close the browser and go back to the site and logon. This will alleviate the issue. |
I am getting an access error. |
![]() |
This only occurs if you have downloaded the Course Manager to the desktop. The Course Manager is not smart enough to seek out the proxy server like Internet Explorer can. All Proxy entries must be configured manually. Here's how you do it:
I
am getting an error message. |
This
is usually a network error that the Player cannot
communicate with the LMS server. Check all network
connections and if on a dial up be sure that
the user is still connected. Sometimes the firewall
can cause this issue. |
My scores are not showing when I go back in. Questions to ask yourself: Q-1) Did the user login with the correct ID (If they are using the Course Manager and login to the Course Manager with a different User ID than they use to log onto the web to play a course the ID will not synchronize scores because it interprets that as two different users.).
Q-2) Did the user click on the Exit button in the player or use the x in the upper right hand corner of the player.
Q-3) Is the user adding to his favorites somewhere after the login page?
Q-4) Are you using a Learner Management System (LMS) other than SkillSoft?
Q-5) Did you see any error message while you were playing the course?
How do I know when I have finished a course? Answer: The following screen indicates that you have reached the end of the course. This does not signify you have met the criteria for completing a course, only that you have reached the end of the course and have the option to Exit or continue reviewing material in the course.
How do I know what the criteria is to achieve a "Completed" status? Answer: Compare
your scores to the criteria in the footnote
at the bottom of the "My Reports"
page. In SkillPort go to the 'My Reports' section and the view will show you which courses are completed: |
