Question 2:

What Internet Browsers are supported for playing courses?

Answer:

  • SkillSoft courseware uses Java Applets to play courses.
  • The learner workstation must have a web browser that fits the following requirements:
    • For NetPlay
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 or greater
    • Netscape Navigator version 4.08 or greater
  • If using the Skillsoft Course Manager locally on the Desktop PC:
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.02 or greater
    • Netscape Navigator version 3.04 or greater

Note: Depending on any previously installed software's configuration or if you are using any Netscape version from 3.x to 4.05, you may be prompted to update additional SkillSoft Course Manager (SCM) components after returning to a fresh browser. It is strongly recommended that you follow these prompts before downloading any content to your local hard-disk.

Question 3:

I click on “Play this course” and it hangs on “Loading please wait.”

Answer:

This is caused by Java not capable of launching the self-executing applet that brings down the player and runs the course. Java is being blocked or filtered from playing through the browser.

  • First, check to see if this is a wide spread issue or an individual machine error. If it is a system wide error (all users have this issue or all users at this location have this issue)
  • If it is system wide it is usually the applet being blocked or filtered at the Proxy/Firewall and the IS department needs to change the settings on the proxy/Firewall.
  • If it is an individual issue, you need to establish the browser type (Internet Explorer or Netscape)

Please note: The resolution for this issue could involve altering your system files or downloading from the Internet. Please check with your IS department before beginning any system changes.

Here's how you do it:

  1. If you are using Netscape
  2. If you are using Internet Explorer

If you are using Netscape, check the settings as follows:

  • Click on 'Edit' on your Netscape browser
  • Choose 'Preferences'

Image of a screen shot from Netscape. In the browser you should click the "edit" button then the "preferences" button.

Click on the word 'Advanced' on the left side. Check to make sure sure that the Java check boxes on the right hand side are 'checked'.

Image of a screen shot indicating that you should now click the word "advanced" on the left side and Check to make sure sure that the Java check boxes on the right hand side are 'checked'.
If the Java boxes are checked then the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is probably corrupt. The resolution to reinstall the Java Virtual Machine in Netscape is to uninstall and reinstall Netscape. There is no way to reinstall just the JVM in Netscape.

One other possibility is to check the speed of the network connection. If it comes back as 1,0, -1 then it could be that it is not a trusted site by the browser. Netscape explains this as follows:

  • When a Java applet attempts to "phone home", or make a socket connection to its originating host, Communicator will first perform a DNS lookup to prevent certain "spoofing" attacks. In some Intranets, DNS lookup for external hosts is disabled, and all external traffic goes through a proxy. In this situation, the applet will normally fail to make the desired connection.
  • With this preference enabled, if the lookup fails, then textual name equivalence is used to determine if the class can make a connection. This option causes the "name of the home" to be relied upon rather than the stricter DNS/IP address.
  • The IS can set it up as a trusted site in the DNS table.

To manually make these settings on the users machine:

With this preference enabled, if the lookup fails, then textual name equivalence is used to determine if the class can make a connection. This option causes the "name of the home" to be relied upon rather than the stricter DNS/IP address.

  • Make sure Netscape is closed.
  • Click on the Windows Start Button ----- select Find --- click on Files or Folders

Image of a screen shot indicating that Netscape should now be closed and then click on the Windows "Start" button. Select "Find" then "Files or Folders."

Type in the Named box the letters 'prefs.js' and make sure the search encompasses all hard drives

When it finds the prefs.js file, highlight the one with your name (or choose default if there isn't one with your name) in the find Window by clicking on it once with your mouse button. Then hold down the shift key and simultaneously right click on the Highlighted selection.

Image of a screen shot indicating that once the file "prefs.js" is located you should highlight the one with your name (or choose default if there isn't one with your name) in the find Window by clicking on it once with your mouse button. Then hold down the shift key and simultaneously right click on the Highlighted selection.

  • Choose 'Open with....'
  • Then choose Notepad
  • When it opens, go to the very bottom of the file and put your cursor at the very end of the last line after the semicolon.
  • Type or paste in this line:
    user_pref("security.lower_java_network_security_by_trusting_proxies", true);

  • Close and save the file.
  • Open Netscape and proceed to take the course

If you are using Internet Explorer, check the settings as follows:

Download a new Java Virtual Machine (JVM) in Internet Explorer by connecting to the following URL:

www.microsoft.com/java

On the next page you will scroll down to the bottom and select the uppermost of the 3 choices (Microsoft VM build #### for Windows 95/98, Windows Me and Windows NT 4.0) and choose to run it from it’s current location. Click OK or YES to any of the questions you will be prompted with.

Begin download of the JVM that is applicable to your browser.

Microsoft VM build 3802 for Windows 95/98, Windows Me and Windows NT 4.0 5.4 MB.
(Important Once installed, the Microsoft VM cannot be uninstalled.)
(All supported language versions are included in this download.)

Microsoft VM build 3802 for Microsoft Windows 2000 (hotfix)
(Important Once installed, the hotfix cannot be uninstalled.)
(Note Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 must be installed prior to installing the 3802 hotfix.)

Microsoft VM Debug Classes (Developers Only)
Remember, to make this take affect, you will need to reboot your pc.

Question 4:

I am getting a box that pops up and is asking me for a 'User Name' and 'Password'.

Answer:

This is a Proxy/Firewall Authentication triggered by your local network.

Image of a screen shot indicating a Proxy/Firewall Authentication triggered by your local network.

It is asking for your 'Network User Name' and 'Password' to check and make sure you are authorized to download this Java Applet.

Have your Network Administrator change the settings on the Firewall or Proxy.

Question 5:

I am getting Script errors in Internet Explorer when I go through the pages.

Answer:

This is usually due to damaged HTTP files in Internet Explorer. The best thing to do in this case is upgrade or reinstall Internet Explorer.

Question 6:

When I try to play the course I am getting a “Program.exe” error.

Answer:

If you receive this message when you try to play a course, then there are parts of the downloaded Course Manager that reside on the Hard Drive.

Image of a screen shot indicating that

The cause for this is usually improper uninstallation of the Course Manager or downloading the Course Manager to your machine without the proper permissions (NT4 / Windows 2000)

Here's how you you remove the offending files - SkillSoftloaded.class

1) Check the c:\winnt\java\classes folder for a SkillSoftloaded.class  file and if there is one delete it.

2) Check the C:\winnt\java\trustlib folder for a - Skillsoftloaded.class file and if there is, delete it.

3) Reinstall the course manager (preferably to the same location as the first time).

4) Close all open programs

5) Click on Start--- click Programs --- click on SkillSoft and select Uninstall

6) This will uninstall the course manager and all of its’ components. You may get an error box that reads “cannot remove SkillSoft folder” Ignore this message and click “OK

7) Reboot the machine.

You should now be able to play a course.

Question 7:

I am getting a message “Only one instance of the course manager can be running”

Answer:

This is caused by the fact that when a user has downloaded the course manager they open it on their desktop and go to the site while they have it open. When a user logs onto the site we automatically check for an installed SkillSoft Course Manager and launch it automatically so that it can synchronize with the server. If it is already open on the desktop the LMS tries to open a second Course Manager.

Here's how you do it:

Close all instances of the course manager, close the browser and go back to the site and logon. This will alleviate the issue.

Question 8:

I am getting an access error.

Image of a screen shot indicating an Access arror.

This only occurs if you have downloaded the Course Manager to the desktop. The Course Manager is not smart enough to seek out the proxy server like Internet Explorer can. All Proxy entries must be configured manually.

Here's how you do it:

  • Set up the Proxy Configuration (This is a one-time event. You will need to get these settings from your Network Administrator or Help Desk)
  • Click on Start menu --- click Programs --- click SkillSoft and click on Proxy Configuration.
  • Type in the Proxy Host Name:
  • Type in the Proxy Port:
  • Uncheck the Disable Proxy Configuration box.
  • Click OK.

Question 9:

I am getting an error message.

Image of a screen shot of the SkillSoft Player encountering an arror communicating with the LMS server.

Answer:

This is usually a network error that the Player cannot communicate with the LMS server. Check all network connections and if on a dial up be sure that the user is still connected. Sometimes the firewall can cause this issue.

Question 10:

My scores are not showing when I go back in.

Questions to ask yourself:

Q-1) Did the user login with the correct ID (If they are using the Course Manager and login to the Course Manager with a different User ID than they use to log onto the web to play a course the ID will not synchronize scores because it interprets that as two different users.).

A-1) You must use the same ID when you log into the Course Manager with the same ID that you use to log into the Learner Management System (LMS) to play or download the course. The LMS looks for the user information that the user logs in with and the files under any other user are overlooked.

Q-2) Did the user click on the Exit button in the player or use the “x” in the upper right hand corner of the player.

A-2) Use the Exit button in the player. This will give the player the opportunity to pass the latest information to the server with the appropriate codes. Also watch for any error messages that may occur and contact Technical Support.

Q-3) Is the user adding to his favorites somewhere after the login page?

A-3) The LMS will not know who the user is and does not know where to store the information. This has been resolved in later versions of the LMS.

Q-4) Are you using a Learner Management System (LMS) other than SkillSoft?

A-4) If you are using a 3rd party LMS it is most likely an AICC issue. Please refer to the AICC documentation for assistance.

Q-5) Did you see any error message while you were playing the course?

A-5) If so please contact Technical Support.

Question 11a:

How do I know when I have finished a course?

Answer:

The following screen indicates that you have reached the end of the course. This does not signify you have met the criteria for completing a course, only that you have reached the end of the course and have the option to Exit or continue reviewing material in the course.
